Instrument Art
I got Victoria home from the shop Monday night, and decided to have a go at photographing it. What do you think?
I’m baaaaacckk!!
So I’ve been super busy lately trying to keep up with of my students and other clients this past week, but I have had enough time to mod my trusty Xavier! So Victoria (The Strat) went to the shop this past week with crazy neck problems, and I’ve been left with the XV-910. Since I haven’t seriously modded anything in a while, I thought I would give her a tune up, and try out an idea I had seen years ago.
The first time I saw Tom Petty on the Old Grey Whistle Test (I believe it was from 76′) I noticed something was seriously different about Mike Campbell’s Les Paul. It was a 1955 Goldtop with the original soapbar P90’s, but the covers were removed, giving it a more aggressive sound.
With this idea in mind, I removed the covers from the dog ear P90s, and re-screwed the pickups into the body. I have noticed that the clarity has improved a good deal, and looks ever better than before.
However at a gig this morning, the upper neck pickup screw apparently was not completely secured, and the pickup “popped”, literally out of place! At least this happened during a guitar break during the song, and I was able to repair it quickly! (Nothing a little washer can’t fix)

❖ “Letters From Laura” ❖
Reading over the sheet music from the musical “Letters From Laura”, in which I am the sole musician. It’s a prewar blues type acoustic soundtrack, which makes me a happy guy!
2010 Xavier XV-910 “The world’s most underrated Epiphone Casino rip off”
I bought this guitar after being unsatisfied with my old Casino. No matter how much work I (not to mention many others) did to it, the guitar never felt “right”. Somehow, I couldn’t put my finger on whatever this problem was, and consequently sold it. In a desperate search for something similar, I ran across this guitar brand new, and untatooed in the winter of 2010. At only $350, this guitar is a steal! Its looks are extremely similar, but with GFS dog ear P90’s, better build quality, and a HUGE variety of finishes, this guitar instantly sold me. The sound of the XV-910 is breathtaking; from the way it can become whisper quiet to extremely loud and dangerous, this guitar is the Swiss Army knife of my rig.
Boss DD-7 “The world’s most underrated delay”
Beautifully clean, stereo goodness. It is a timeless delay, that sounds as beautiful as it looks. Incredibly simple, it even has a small loop feature, making it nearly as versatile as the digital setting of a Strymon Timeline! I always use it before the Timeline to split the signal to go stereo into the Timeline, and consequently the BlueSky. This pedal is worth its weight in gold for $179.
DMB Lunar Echo & Cosmic Crunch
They don’t get more beautiful than this. Handmade art, these pedals sound as beautiful as they look. I wouldn’t take them off my board for anything, well, except to take pictures of them of course! By the way, I love the Lunar Echo more than my new Strymon Timeline!
